about

PRESS:

While most good drummers know how to use texture and subtlety (or at least should), you won’t find many who take the idea quite as far as Massimo Discepoli
All About Jazz

‘Last Year, the Next Day’ show a progression in Discepoli’s sound and vision. He isn’t satisfied in just creating ambient soundscapes. Oh no. He wants to create something that makes you move, and most importantly, smile. In a world where there is too much emphasis on being sombre Discepoli reminds us that music should be entertaining too. And this is exactly what ‘Last Year, the Next Day’ is
Vital Weekly

Last Year the Next Day pushes beyond an emphasis on atmospherics and draws its inspiration from the less ethereal genres of progressive rock, post-rock, and jazz fusion.[…]Highly recommended

The tracks display the percussion work of a master.
This album is a good part of the profile of our protagonist, with the ability to integrate different musical genres

In “Last year, the next day” the musician Massimo Discepoli partially moves away from the slowly developing ambient suggestions of his two previous albums, choosing instead to use musical structures closer to post-rock, jazz and progressive, thus creating eight instrumental pieces that draw evocative and abstract landscapes, in which electronics are combined with the numerous acoustic instruments used.
As usual, the rhythmic aspect is of great importance, with the use of many percussions (some of them self-built) alongside the drums and repetitive and hypnotic patterns, which give a much more global sound to the album, without overwhelming the melodic strength that characterizes the songs, both those of greater intensity and the introspective ballads. The result is a music without borders but at the same time abstract, reminiscent of the atmospheres of Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, Tim Hecker and Portico Quartet.
